Asia SGE | Seeing Purple: How 2026 Hong Kong’s New Budget Signals Strength and Resilience for the Future

In his recent blog post, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po announced that Hong Kong 2026 Finance Budget, set to be released on Wednesday, will feature a purple cover. He explained that the color symbolizes the strengthening internal momentum of Hong Kong’s economy amidst a rapidly changing external environment.

Chan expressed gratitude for the insights shared by various sectors, noting a collective desire for Hong Kong’s development and better support for its diverse communities. He highlighted that the government remains focused on boosting the economy, pursuing development, and improving people’s livelihoods in line with societal expectations.

While Hong Kong’s economy has had a good start this year following sustained growth, Chan emphasized the need for prudent fiscal management. Given the unpredictable external environment and economic transformation, the government must prioritize needs, make difficult choices, and maintain adequate reserves for unforeseen circumstances.

Chan assured that he would carefully consider all views and take a holistic approach to ensure the Budget balances short, medium, and long-term societal needs. He called on everyone to stand together and strive relentlessly for higher-quality and more inclusive social and economic development in Hong Kong.
